MoonPay Korea has hired former Streami executive Choi Han-gyeol as vice president of strategy as it expands partnerships with banks and other financial institutions in South Korea.

Choi will oversee MoonPay Korea’s mid- to long-term market strategy and business development as the company builds payments and stablecoin infrastructure ahead of South Korea’s planned framework for won-backed digital tokens.

Choi Brings More Than Eight Years Of Gopax Experience

Choi spent more than eight years at Streami, operator of the Gopax crypto exchange, where he worked across strategy, regulatory engagement and partnerships with financial institutions.

He previously held roles at Mirae Asset Securities and Industrial Bank of Korea, giving him experience across securities, banking and digital assets.

At MoonPay Korea, Choi will focus on partnerships with banks and other financial firms as the company develops local payments, settlement, and digital asset infrastructure.

Woori Bank Partnership Targets Won Stablecoin Infrastructure

MoonPay Korea signed a memorandum of understanding with Woori Bank in April to develop infrastructure for won-backed stablecoins. Woori became the first banking member of MoonPay Korea’s KRW Stablecoin Consortium.

The planned setup would use MoonPay’s wallet, settlement, and currency conversion infrastructure to support potential stablecoin distribution and payments, subject to South Korea’s final regulatory framework.

MoonPay also invested in Korean fintech Finger earlier this year as part of its broader effort to build relationships across the country’s financial sector.

South Korea Stablecoin Rules Remain Unsettled

South Korea has not yet finalized the rules governing privately issued won-backed stablecoins, leaving banks, fintech firms and crypto companies to prepare infrastructure while the regulatory framework remains under discussion.

MoonPay’s immediate focus is therefore on partnerships and market preparation rather than launching a won stablecoin product. Choi’s appointment adds a senior local executive as the company builds those relationships.
