Ethereum Tests Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction

Ethereum’s Economic Zone project has completed an atomic transaction linking Ethereum mainnet with a layer-2 network, testing a system that could let applications interact across both layers without completing separate bridge transactions.

The Oct. 5 mainnet test carried 0.001 ETH alongside a rollup state update. Both parts were coordinated as one transaction, meaning they either completed together or would have reverted together if part of the process failed.

EEZ Puts L1 and L2 Calls Inside One Transaction

The Ethereum Economic Zone, or EEZ, is being developed to give participating rollups synchronous access to Ethereum mainnet.

Under the framework, a smart contract on an EEZ rollup can call a contract on Ethereum, receive the result and continue executing without waiting for a separate cross-chain message.

That differs from many current L2 workflows, where moving assets or instructions between networks can require bridges, separate transactions and additional settlement time.

Atomic Execution Targets Fragmented Rollup Liquidity

EEZ coordinates L1 execution with corresponding L2 state changes so linked operations settle together. If the linked Ethereum execution fails, the corresponding L2 state change can be reverted.

The framework is being designed for rollups whose cross-chain execution is coordinated with Ethereum settlement rather than operating as fully isolated execution environments.

The project is partly aimed at reducing liquidity fragmentation, where applications deployed across multiple L2s maintain separate pools, contracts, and bridging infrastructure.

Gnosis Chain Targets First EEZ Rollup Block by Early 2027

The 0.001 ETH transaction was a technical demonstration rather than a production rollout. EEZ’s core implementation remains early stage and has not completed the full auditing and proving work required for broader use.

GnosisDAO approved a plan in August to transition Gnosis Chain from an independent layer 1 into an EEZ rollup settling on Ethereum.

The project is targeting its first EEZ rollup block around December 2026 or January 2027. The initial version is expected to support atomic L2-to-L1 calls, with broader bidirectional execution and additional proving features planned later.
