Morgan Stanley has created a Digital Asset Lab to test stablecoins, tokenized assets and decentralized finance applications away from its core systems. The bank will use the environment to evaluate blockchain infrastructure before deciding whether any technology should move into broader use.

Lab Will Test Stablecoins and Tokenized Assets

Morgan Stanley plans to examine stablecoins, tokenized deposits, central bank digital currencies and tokenized money-market funds. It will also test DeFi applications, including vaults that deploy assets through predefined blockchain-based strategies.

The work remains experimental and does not represent a commitment to launch client products. Amy Oldenburg, Morgan Stanley’s head of digital assets, said the lab provides a controlled environment for testing.

“The digital-asset lab will give us a secure, compliant and segregated environment to be able to test and explore some of these new areas of digital assets.”

Tests Stay Separate From Core Systems

Morgan Stanley’s innovation labs allow teams to test emerging technology before connecting it with operational infrastructure. Megan Brewer, who leads market innovation and labs, said the wider network handles as many as 270 projects annually.

The bank operates innovation facilities in New York, Glasgow, and Bangalore. Previous projects have covered electronic trading, cybersecurity and machine learning.

Morgan Stanley Expands Digital Asset Work

The new lab follows other Morgan Stanley moves into crypto and blockchain markets. In June, Morgan Stanley Wealth Management announced a referral arrangement with Galaxy Digital for eligible clients seeking crypto lending and spot crypto exchange-traded product exposure.

Morgan Stanley has also researched tokenization, stablecoins, and digital payment rails. Any broader deployment from the new lab will depend on testing results, regulatory requirements and internal approval.
