Ether ETFs Extend Outflows as Bitcoin Funds Edge Positive

U.S. spot Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recorded about $60.3 million in net outflows on Oct. 15, their second consecutive negative session. Bitcoin funds returned to a small $5.1 million net inflow, supported by inflows into a single fund.

BlackRock and Grayscale Record Ether Redemptions

BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA) recorded $44.4 million in net outflows, while the Grayscale Ethereum Staking ETF (ETHE) lost $18.3 million, Farside Investors’ figures show.

The Fidelity Ethereum Fund (FETH) attracted $2.4 million, partly offsetting those withdrawals. The other Ether funds in Farside’s table recorded no net flows for the session.

The latest redemptions followed $129.5 million in net outflows on Oct. 14, bringing the two-session total to $189.8 million. The figures were reviewed as of 2:50 p.m. South Africa Standard Time on Oct. 16 and remain subject to revision.

IBIT Supplies Bitcoin Funds’ Only Inflow

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) attracted $16.8 million. The Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF (BTCO) recorded $4.1 million in outflows, while the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (BTC) lost $7.6 million. The remaining Bitcoin funds recorded zero net flows.

The positive aggregate followed $261.4 million in net outflows on Oct. 14. The latest inflow recovered only a small portion of that previous session’s withdrawals.

Across the completed October sessions through Oct. 15, Bitcoin funds remained negative. A Coin Insider calculation of Farside’s daily totals puts their cumulative net outflow at $532.3 million.

IBIT was positive over that October period, with $261.3 million in net inflows, even as withdrawals from other Bitcoin funds left the wider group negative.

ETHA Leads October’s Ether Outflows

A Coin Insider calculation covering the 11 completed U.S. trading sessions from Oct. 1 through Oct. 15 puts Ether funds’ combined net outflow at $885.4 million. ETHA accounted for $726.5 million, or about 82% of that net total.

Grayscale’s two Ether funds recorded combined net outflows of $83.5 million over the same period. Fidelity’s FETH recorded $43.7 million in net withdrawals. Ether funds were negative on 10 of those 11 sessions, with Oct. 13 the only positive day.

Those dollar totals do not account for differences in fund size. A larger fund can lose more dollars while losing a smaller proportion of its assets. A ranking of redemptions relative to each fund’s assets remains unverified.

Authorized Firms Create and Redeem ETF Shares

Fund flows measure net creations and redemptions of shares. They differ from trading volume, which includes purchases and sales of existing ETF shares between investors on an exchange.

Only authorized participants, approved firms that transact directly with the trust, can create or redeem large blocks of ETHA shares. Those transactions can involve cash or Ether, while other investors trade shares on Nasdaq.

Farside’s aggregate figures do not identify the ultimate investors or their motives. The opposing daily totals therefore do not establish that money moved directly from Ether funds into Bitcoin funds or demonstrate a broad shift in institutional conviction.
