4,393 ETH From Ethereum Foundation-Linked Wallets Hits Kraken
- Two wallets linked to an early Ethereum Foundation distribution transferred 4,393 ETH worth about $11.13 million to Kraken on Oct. 12.
- On-chain analysts estimate that addresses tracing back to that original allocation have sent a cumulative 49,751 ETH to Kraken over the past decade.
- The Ethereum Foundation has not publicly tied the transfer to a treasury sale, and the ownership of the wallets remains unconfirmed.
Two wallets linked on-chain to an early Ethereum Foundation distribution transferred 4,393 ETH worth about $11.13 million to Kraken on Oct. 12. The deposit could make the ETH available for trading, but blockchain activity alone does not show that the assets were sold, and the Ethereum Foundation has not publicly tied the transfer to a treasury sale.
Wallets Trace Back to Early Foundation Distribution
The sending wallets are associated with ETH that originated from an Ethereum Foundation address roughly 10 years ago. One wallet involved in the latest activity had previously received 59,751 ETH from a Foundation address when ETH traded near $0.90.
On-chain analysts estimate that addresses tracing back to that original allocation have sent a cumulative 49,751 ETH to Kraken over the past decade. Analysts estimated the average contemporaneous ETH market price across those transfer dates at approximately $658, although that figure does not establish the prices at which any coins were actually sold.
The wallet connection also does not prove that the Ethereum Foundation currently controls the addresses. Blockchain data establishes a historical flow from a Foundation wallet, while the ownership and purpose of the latest transfers remain unconfirmed.
Kraken Deposit Does Not Confirm a Sale
Sending ETH to an exchange can precede a sale, but it can also support custody, trading, or other account activity. No on-chain record cited so far shows an executed sale of the 4,393 ETH, and neither Kraken nor the Ethereum Foundation has announced the purpose of the deposit.
The distinction is relevant because the Ethereum Foundation has publicly disclosed some of its own treasury conversions in advance. In April, it announced plans to convert 5,000 ETH into stablecoins through CoW Swap using a time-weighted execution strategy to fund research, grants, and donations.
Foundation Policy Allows Periodic ETH Sales
The Ethereum Foundation’s treasury policy calls for periodic reviews of its fiat reserves and operating-cost buffer to determine whether ETH should be sold during the following three months. Those sales can take place through fiat off-ramps or on-chain swaps for fiat-denominated assets.
The policy does not establish that the latest Kraken transfer came from an official Foundation treasury decision. Until the Foundation confirms control of the wallets or the deposited ETH is linked to an executed trade, the Oct. 12 transaction shows movement to an exchange rather than a confirmed sale.
