Payward stated on Nov. 5 that an affiliated investment fund and clients had acquired AAVE tokens, expanding their exposure to decentralized lending and protocol governance. The buyers included Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, a Payward-affiliated fund.

The official announcement described secondary-market purchases of existing tokens, rather than an equity investment in Aave Labs. Payward did not disclose the amount purchased, leaving the investment’s size and potential voting influence unspecified.

Governance Rights Connect AAVE to Treasury Decisions

AAVE is the governance token of the Aave lending protocol. Holders can vote on proposals or delegate voting power, although Payward did not announce how the acquired tokens would participate in governance.

Those decisions can affect protocol upgrades, treasury spending and lending parameters. For users supplying or borrowing assets through Aave, governance helps determine borrowing limits and the thresholds at which collateral can be liquidated.

The companies highlighted the Aave Will Win framework, under which Aave Labs committed to directing revenue from Aave-branded products to the DAO treasury alongside existing network fees. That places revenue within a tokenholder-governed treasury; it does not establish a direct cash distribution to every AAVE holder.

Token Investment Is Separate From Lending Activity

Aave allows users to supply digital assets to liquidity pools and borrow against collateral. Suppliers can earn interest, while borrowers face liquidation risk if their collateral becomes insufficient.

Simply holding AAVE does not create either position or automatically generate lending interest. The acquired tokens instead provide exposure to AAVE’s market value and governance rights, with lending and borrowing requiring separate transactions.

Further Purchases and Collaboration Remain Open

Payward linked the acquisition to demand from clients seeking DeFi exposure. Gurpreet Oberoi, its vice president for asset management and institutional business, described the investment as reflecting long-term interest in on-chain credit markets.

The company may make additional AAVE acquisitions and is exploring opportunities to collaborate with Aave. The announcement did not specify a new customer product, integration, or launch timetable.

Aave Labs founder Stani Kulechov described working with Payward as a step toward reaching more retail and institutional users. The companies did not disclose specific distribution arrangements or customer-access changes.
