Anchorage Seeks Swap Dealer Status for Crypto Options Business

anchorage.com

Anchorage Digital stated on Nov. 5 that it had applied for CFTC swap dealer registration, seeking to expand its institutional crypto options business. The filing concerns Anchorage Digital Swap Dealer, LLC, which submitted its application to the National Futures Association (NFA).

For institutional clients, registration would place the dealer under a federal framework covering risk management and transactions. Anchorage announced an application, rather than completed registration, so the filing does not establish that the subsidiary has obtained that status.

Corporate Crypto Holdings Drive Options Demand

Much of Anchorage’s options’ growth came from public companies holding Bitcoin and Ether, alongside asset managers and investment funds. Options can help those clients protect against falling prices or generate income by accepting contractual obligations, with costs and risks depending on the strategy.

The company cleared that the clients wanted a regulated U.S. counterparty, familiar legal documentation and margin and reporting arrangements compatible with their existing risk processes. Anchorage presented registration as a way to meet those requirements and serve more institutional clients.

Registration Covers the Dealer’s Risk Controls

The swap dealer framework addresses capital, risk management, margin, trade confirmations, reporting, and treatment of counterparties. These requirements govern the firm standing behind a trade and how transactions are managed; they do not remove the underlying market risk.

The NFA cleared that the firms meeting the swap dealer definition generally must register once swap-dealing activity exceeds $8 billion in gross notional amount over a twelve-month period. Notional amount measures contracts’ reference value, rather than revenue or the amount clients could lose.

Anchorage did not disclose its swap-dealing notional volume in its announcement. The filing alone therefore does not establish how its activity compares with that threshold.

Application Is Separate From Anchorage’s Bank Charter

Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A., operates under an Office of the Comptroller of the Currency charter. The swap dealer application concerns a separate entity and regulatory framework.

Applicants must submit registration and membership forms and documentation addressing compliance with applicable swap dealer rules. The NFA cleared that the registration follows receipt of the required applications, fees and dues, plus an initial review of the submitted compliance documentation for facial completeness.
