Qubic Halts Network After Attack Drains 1,404 Wallets
- Qubic halted its network after an attacker drained 1,404 wallets of approximately 2.94 trillion QU using weak wallet seeds.
- Computors coordinated a network halt at tick 85,371,949 while MEXC froze an account receiving 12.9% of the stolen tokens.
- A Computor quorum will decide the network resolution after a community poll, with no restart date or reimbursement guaranteed yet.
Qubic halted its network after an attacker drained 1,404 wallets of approximately 2.94 trillion QU. An Oct. 18 community notice relaying core-team updates attributed the theft to wallet seeds generated with insufficient randomness.
Qubic Contributors Identify Weak Wallet Seeds
The notice identified affected seeds created before Oct. 18 through browsers on iPhones and iPads, or Safari on Macs. It also identified seeds generated through the Qubic iOS app before July 2025.
A wallet seed provides access to its associated funds. Insufficient randomness can make that secret easier to predict, allowing unauthorized access without the holder disclosing it.
The update said version 4.26.4 corrected the seed-generation process. Previously generated weak seeds remained a concern, including those associated with addresses absent from the recorded theft list.
Computors Halt Transfers as Bitget Suspends Services
Qubic’s network participants, known as Computors, coordinated a halt at tick 85,371,949, according to the notice. A community-board update said 87.1% of the stolen tokens remained immobilized on the network, while MEXC froze an account that received the remaining 12.9%.
Bitget separately announced that it suspended QUBIC deposits and withdrawals from 5:31 a.m. UTC on Oct. 18. The exchange cited wallet maintenance and said it would announce the resumption time separately. Its notice addressed transfers into and out of the platform, without announcing a trading suspension.
Qubic Leaves Recovery Decision to Computors
The community notice said a Computor quorum would decide the resolution, informed by a community poll. It said a full technical report would follow once recovery arrangements were settled.
Qubic’s governance documentation assigns Computors responsibility for core protocol proposals. The reviewed incident notice did not establish a restart date or guarantee reimbursement to affected holders.
