Strategy Records $19.53 Billion Quarterly Profit on Bitcoin Gain
- Strategy reported a third-quarter net income of $19.53 billion on October 29.
- A $20.91 billion Bitcoin valuation gain drove the third-quarter operating income increase.
- Fair-value accounting of Bitcoin can create reported income without corresponding cash generation.
Strategy recorded third-quarter net income of $19.53 billion on Oct. 29, driven by a previously disclosed $20.91 billion Bitcoin valuation gain despite declining software revenue. The company had already estimated the gain in an Oct. 5 filing.
Bitcoin Gain Drives Quarterly Earnings
Operating income reached $20.91 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with $3.89 billion a year earlier. Revenue fell to $125.4 million from $128.7 million, separating the improvement in reported profit from performance in its software business.
Net income attributable to common stockholders was $19.12 billion after preferred-stock dividends. Diluted earnings per common share rose to $44.75 from $8.42.
Accounting Gain Differs From Cash Generation
Strategy measures its Bitcoin holdings at fair value and recognizes changes through earnings. Rising prices can therefore produce substantial reported income without the company selling those holdings or receiving equivalent cash.
Falling Bitcoin prices can produce accounting losses in subsequent quarters even when Strategy sells no coins. This creates a direct connection between cryptocurrency valuations and reported results, alongside the performance of its software operations.
Strategy previously estimated that releasing a tax allowance would reduce its associated deferred tax expense from approximately $6 billion to $1.88 billion. Its Oct. 5 filing also estimated a Sept. 30 digital-asset carrying value of $70.82 billion.
Holdings Reach 848,517 Bitcoin
Strategy held 848,517 BTC as of Oct. 25, acquired for approximately $64.02 billion, or $75,446 per coin. Its holdings had increased 26% since the beginning of the year.
The $64.02 billion acquisition cost covers holdings as of Oct. 25; the earlier $70.82 billion carrying value reflects fair-value accounting at Sept. 30. The figures measure different things and cover different reporting dates.
As of Oct. 25, Strategy recorded approximately $2.04 billion in year-to-date STRC preferred-share repurchases, including unsettled purchases. It separately held a $4.83 billion dollar reserve and $242.4 million in general-purpose cash.
The reserve is intended to fund preferred-stock dividends and debt interest. Unrealized Bitcoin gains do not themselves supply that cash, while preferred dividends remain subject to each security’s terms.
