Binance Pay Opens Crypto Spending in Japan

Binance Pay has opened crypto payments at PayPay-supported merchants across Japan for eligible overseas visitors, allowing users to spend more than 100 supported cryptocurrencies while merchants continue receiving Japanese yen.

The service went live on Sept. 30 through HIVEX, a payment interoperability network connecting overseas payment services with PayPay. Binance Pay uses USDT as the backend settlement layer, while PayPay settles transactions with merchants in yen.

48M Binance Pay Users Can Access PayPay Merchant Network

Eligible travelers can either scan a merchant’s PayPay QR code through Binance Pay or present a payment code for the merchant to scan.

Binance said about 48 million eligible Binance Pay users across more than 100 countries and regions can access the service. The feature is limited to qualifying overseas Binance users visiting Japan and is not available to Japanese residents using Binance Japan.

Users can pay with more than 100 supported cryptocurrencies through the Japan rollout rather than being limited to USDT.

Merchants Receive Yen While USDT Handles Backend Settlement

The HIVEX connection means PayPay-supported merchants do not need to build a separate crypto payment system or hold digital assets.

Binance Pay handles the crypto payment and uses USDT for backend settlement, while the merchant side of the transaction remains denominated in yen through PayPay.

PayPay’s network spans retailers, restaurants, accommodation providers, vending machines, taxis, and some public transportation services, extending the Binance Pay integration across a broad range of everyday spending locations.

PayPay Holds 40% Stake in Binance Japan

The rollout builds on an existing relationship between PayPay and Binance. PayPay acquired a 40% stake in Binance Japan in October 2025 as part of a capital and business alliance linking its payment network with Binance’s digital asset services.

Binance Japan later added PayPay Money support for crypto purchases and sales. Those services are separate from the new visitor payment feature, which is designed for eligible Binance users based outside Japan.

Binance Pay supports more than 300 cryptocurrencies globally and says it has processed more than $321 billion in transaction volume since launching in 2021.
