Cloud hosting platform Railway warned on Oct. 21 that an unauthorized party may have obtained customer credentials in readable form. It urged users to replace stored secrets and check service logs for unusual activity.

Investigator Links Wallet Drains to Stored Private Keys

Investigator Taylor Monahan linked the incident to roughly $371,000 in suspected cryptocurrency theft across at least 19 Ethereum-compatible networks. She attributed the thefts to private keys stored on Railway.

Monahan identified more than 500 transactions involving over 200 addresses. The earliest was at 21:36 SAST on Oct. 21. Railway has not confirmed the loss estimate.

Railway Urges Users to Replace Stored Credentials

The affected systems store application settings known as environment variables. These can contain API keys, database passwords and credentials used to access private software registries.

Railway said some customers may have been affected but urged all users to replace stored credentials. It will contact affected customers as it identifies them.

Railway also published recovery guides for database accounts, cloud services and payment providers. Its AWS guide recommends checking account activity and billing records for unauthorized use and deactivating potentially exposed access keys.

The company believes the incident is part of a series of attacks on hosting platforms aimed at compromising AI service providers. It said it had notified those providers so they could revoke potentially exposed keys.

Builds Return for Pro and Enterprise Customers

Railway’s 10:15 UTC update on Oct. 22 said builds were available for Pro and Enterprise customers, while access for Hobby, Free and Trial customers was still being restored. Deployment queues remained delayed, and the company asked users to avoid repeatedly triggering the same deployment.

Railway has also invalidated all of its API tokens and regenerated storage-bucket credentials. Customers using Railway’s API must create replacement tokens. Services using storage-bucket credentials need redeployment to load the new credentials.

GitHub registry tokens removed from Railway remain valid on GitHub until customers revoke them. Customers deploying through GitHub must reconnect their accounts.
