Grayscale expanded crypto-for-shares subscriptions across 10 investment products on Oct. 21, allowing eligible holders to move tokens into investment vehicles without first selling for cash. Access requires an authorized participant, a financial firm permitted to create and redeem product shares, or a connected intermediary.

Grayscale Includes Bitcoin, Ether and Eight Other Assets

The lineup covers Bitcoin, Ether, Avalanche, Chainlink, Dogecoin, Hyperliquid, Solana, Sui, XRP and Zcash. Investors contribute the corresponding underlying cryptocurrency for shares, retaining exposure through the investment vehicle.

Approximate minimums ranged from $80,300 for the Solana product to $364,800 for the Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF, based on Oct. 20 prices. The Ether product’s minimum was approximately $232,300, while XRP required about $257,000. Grayscale said the amounts fluctuate with asset prices and may change without notice.

Investors Face Transfer Costs and Product Conditions

Subscriptions remain subject to availability, facilitator fees and applicable terms. Grayscale said shares may be held in brokerage or retirement accounts and potentially used as collateral.

The company warned that contributions may create taxable events. Shares can also trade above or below their underlying asset value, while transfers introduce custody and execution risks.

Grayscale said the process may reduce the operational burden of self-custody. However, the products rely on third-party custodians, so exchanging tokens for shares changes the custody arrangement rather than eliminating custody risk. Those custodians secure the products’ private keys, which allow control and transfer of the underlying digital assets.

SEC Previously Approved In-Kind Creations and Redemptions

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved in-kind creations and redemptions by authorized participants for Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded products in July 2025. Previously, the affected products permitted only cash-based creations and redemptions. The approval allowed cryptocurrency to be delivered or received in those transactions instead of requiring dollars, bringing their settlement options into line with other commodity-based investment vehicles.

Creations issue new shares, while redemptions remove shares from circulation. In-kind processing exchanges cryptocurrency for newly issued shares, or shares for cryptocurrency. Ordinary exchange trading instead involves buying and selling existing shares, without creating or redeeming them.
