Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by Pudgy Penguins parent Igloo Inc., will shut down on Dec. 15, 2026 after failing to find a sustainable model for its consumer-focused blockchain. Users must bridge their assets off the network before the deadline because Abstract said funds left on the chain afterward will become inaccessible.

The network launched its mainnet in January 2025 and went on to attract more than 400,000 users and over 144 applications. Abstract said its growth was ultimately constrained by limited DeFi activity, insufficient on-chain liquidity, minimal institutional participation and high operating costs.

Users Must Move Assets Before Dec. 15

Abstract said users can transfer assets through its official Migration Hub or native bridge, with the native bridge carrying an estimated three-hour delay. The project’s engineering and ecosystem teams will also assist applications moving to other chains.

The team warned users about impersonation attempts, fake migration websites and direct messages claiming to represent Abstract. It advised users to verify migration links through official channels before moving funds.

Igloo Reports Eight-Figure Losses

Igloo CEO Luca Netz said the company had funded Abstract for about 18 months and had incurred eight-figure losses over roughly two years of development and operations. He said the company could no longer justify continuing to fund the network from the Pudgy Penguins business.

Netz said Igloo considered other options, including issuing an Abstract token, but rejected that approach.

“Even after losing 8 figures, we could have launched a token or pursued an ICO. Ultimately we decided against this.”

Consumer-Focused Model Failed to Scale

Abstract said a standalone network focused primarily on consumer applications had not developed enough liquidity, DeFi activity or institutional participation to remain sustainable. The team said it spent the previous 12 months exploring alternative paths to product-market fit before deciding to close the chain.

Despite those limitations, Abstract reported more than 300 million transactions and brought major consumer brands into its ecosystem. The shutdown will redirect Igloo’s resources toward Pudgy Penguins, its NFTs and the PENGU token.

Igloo Refocuses on Pudgy Penguins

Netz said Igloo’s attention will now return fully to the Pudgy Penguins business as Abstract winds down. The company plans to concentrate resources on expanding the brand rather than continuing to finance its own blockchain. Abstract users have until Dec.15 to complete migrations. The team said community support will remain available until the chain ceases operations.
