Key Takeaways

  • The dollar index rose from about 99 in early September to roughly 102.5, helped by the Fed’s 25 basis point hike and long-term Treasury yields at multi-decade highs.
  • The euro fell to around 1.12, a 17-month low, as French budget pressure and Spain’s snap election on Nov. 29 weigh on confidence.
  • A stronger dollar typically pressures risk assets, yet Bitcoin has held near $86,000, which some market participants read as a sign of underlying demand.

The U.S. Dollar Index reached roughly 102.5 on Monday, its highest level in nearly 18 months, as rising Treasury yields and fiscal uncertainty in Europe pushed investors toward the dollar. Bitcoin held near $86,000 despite the tighter financial conditions typically associated with a strengthening currency.

Dollar Strength Builds on Rising Yields

The index, which measures the dollar against a basket of six major currencies, has climbed from around 99 in early September and now sits comfortably above its 200-day moving average, also near 99, a signal of strengthening upward momentum.

The Federal Reserve’s decision last month to raise interest rates by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4% has helped underpin the dollar’s strength. Markets are pricing in further tightening, with a target range of 4.5% to 4.75% emerging as the most likely outcome by June 2027.

That expectation has pushed Treasury yields higher alongside broader concerns over inflation, government borrowing and fiscal sustainability, with long-term U.S. yields reaching levels last seen more than two decades ago.

Why a Stronger Dollar Pressures Risk Assets

A stronger dollar typically creates headwinds for risk assets including stocks and Bitcoin. It raises the cost of servicing dollar-denominated debt held outside the U.S. and reduces the purchasing power of overseas investors looking to buy dollar-priced assets.

When paired with higher U.S. interest rates, it also makes cash and government bonds more attractive relative to non-yielding assets, raising the bar for capital to flow into equities and crypto instead.

Major currencies typically move less sharply than stocks or cryptocurrencies day to day, but shifts in monetary policy and investor confidence can still produce outsized moves in foreign exchange markets, as this month’s rally in the dollar index illustrates.

A sustained climb of the kind the index has shown since early September. It moved from around 99 to roughly 102.5 in a matter of weeks, represents a meaningful shift in currency markets, even if the scale looks modest compared with the kind of daily swings common in crypto.

Euro Weakness Reflects Political and Fiscal Strain

Euro weakness is a major driver of the dollar index’s rise, since the euro accounts for 57.6% of the basket against which the index is measured. The euro has fallen to around 1.12 against the dollar, a 17-month low, as fiscal and political concerns weigh on investor confidence in the currency.

France faces mounting pressure over its budget deficit and borrowing costs ahead of next year’s presidential election. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has separately called a snap election for Nov. 29, adding further political uncertainty across the eurozone at a time when investors are already reassessing European fiscal risk.

Currency markets tend to react quickly to signs of political instability in major economies. Elections and budget disputes can introduce uncertainty about future fiscal policy, debt issuance and government spending, all factors that influence how investors price a currency relative to its peers.

With both France and Spain facing distinct sources of political uncertainty simultaneously, the combined effect has weighed more heavily on the euro than either development might have on its own.

Bitcoin Holds Steady Despite the Headwinds

Bitcoin has continued trading around $86,000 after a strong start to October, a level that has held even as the dollar’s rise and rising bond yields have created the kind of macro backdrop that has historically pressured the asset.

That resilience echoes a broader pattern seen throughout the current rally, in which Bitcoin has repeatedly absorbed headwinds, including the Federal Reserve’s rate increase and the Clarity Act’s Senate defeat, without triggering a sustained reversal.

Whether that resilience holds if the dollar’s rally extends further, or if European fiscal concerns escalate into broader market stress, remains to be seen.

For now, Bitcoin’s ability to hold its current range amid tightening financial conditions is being read by some market participants as a sign of underlying demand strong enough to offset macro pressure that would typically weigh more heavily on the asset.
