SMBC Nikko and Uniswap Plan Japan DeFi Gateway for Mid-2027
- SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind are partnering with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation to build a Japanese decentralized finance gateway by mid-2027.
- The gateway will feature custom liquidity pools using Uniswap v4 hooks alongside verifiable AI vaults to manage positions within predefined controls.
- The announcement does not confirm FSA approval for public use or set a commercial launch date beyond the development target.
SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind are working with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation to build a decentralized finance gateway for Japanese investors, with development targeted for completion by mid-2027.
The project will combine liquidity pools, AI-assisted investment tools and compliance controls designed to give users a managed route into DeFi while Japan continues developing its regulatory approach to on-chain finance.
Uniswap v4 Hooks Will Add AML and Investor Controls
The planned DeFi Gateway will include custom liquidity pools using Uniswap v4 hooks. Those hooks will allow developers to add anti-money laundering, counterterrorism financing and investor-protection controls directly to pool activity.
The partners also plan liquidity strategies for digital assets including stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets, with Uniswap Labs contributing protocol integration expertise and Nyx Foundation advising on market-making and hook design.
AI Vaults Will Help Manage DeFi Positions
The project will also develop agentic vaults and user interfaces using verifiable and reproducible AI. The tools are intended to help Japanese investors access DeFi and automate parts of investment management within predefined controls.
Nethermind will co-lead technical development across engineering, AI integration and smart contract security while testing automated market-making strategies used by the gateway.
Base Will Support Deployment and Agent Payments
Base will support deployment within its Ethereum layer-2 ecosystem and provide technical feedback on x402-based agent payment infrastructure.
SMBC Nikko will lead regulatory discussions and contribute compliance, risk modeling and portfolio management expertise.
The securities firm began exploring controlled DeFi access with Nethermind in March, initially focusing on automated market makers and agentic AI.
FSA Updates Will Continue Ahead of Mid-2027 Target
The companies plan to share development progress with Japan’s Financial Services Agency and other authorities as discussions around DeFi regulation continue.
The announcement does not say the FSA has approved the gateway for public use, and no commercial launch date has been set beyond the mid-2027 development target.
The immediate work will focus on building and testing the liquidity pools, AI tools and compliance controls before any broader rollout in Japan.
