Polymarket Hires Zora Co-Founder Jacob Horne to Rebuild DeFi Product
- Polymarket hired former Zora CEO Jacob Horne on Sept. 17 to work directly on its onchain product with CEO Shayne Coplan.
- Polymarket is currently rewriting its matching engine in Rust to address technical debt in its trading stack.
- Polymarket has not announced any specific fee, liquidity or market-structure changes tied to Horne’s arrival.
Polymarket has hired Jacob Horne, co-founder and former CEO of Zora, to work directly with CEO Shayne Coplan on its onchain product. The appointment comes as Polymarket works to improve its DeFi trading experience and expand its senior leadership team.
Horne Will Focus on Polymarket’s DeFi Product
Coplan announced the hire on Sept. 17 and gave Horne a broad product mandate focused on Polymarket’s crypto-native platform. Coplan indicated that Polymarket’s DeFi product needed renewed attention as the company expanded into other areas. Coplan said:
“He will be working closely with me on product, in particular making Polymarket DeFi great again”.
Polymarket Is Reworking Its Trading Infrastructure
The hire comes as Polymarket rebuilds parts of its trading stack. Vice President of DeFi Engineering Josh Stevens said in August that its existing central limit order book had accumulated technical debt and would not provide the long-term foundation the company wanted.
The team is rewriting the matching engine in Rust while continuing to operate its current system. Horne’s appointment adds a senior product-focused hire to that effort, although Polymarket has not announced specific fee, liquidity or market-structure changes tied to his arrival.
Horne Helped Build Zora’s Creator-Coin Model
Horne co-founded Zora and led the company for more than six years before leaving the CEO role earlier this month. Zora built tools that allow online content and creator profiles to become tradeable tokens.
The company became closely connected with Coinbase through Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network. Base previously said posts in its social feed could become tradeable coins powered by Zora, making the protocol an important part of its creator-token push.
Horne was not a Coinbase employee. Describing him as Coinbase’s social-coin architect would overstate the relationship between Zora and Coinbase.
Base Later Reassessed Its Social-Coin Strategy
Coinbase and Base promoted creator coins and onchain social products before reassessing that strategy in 2026. Base creator Jesse Pollak said bets involving social products, including Zora and creator coins, had fallen short as Base shifted more attention toward trading, payments and AI agents.
Horne now moves from creator-token infrastructure into prediction markets, where users trade contracts tied to event outcomes. His role at Polymarket will focus on improving the product used by its DeFi and onchain audience.
Polymarket Expands Its Leadership Team
Horne is the latest senior addition to Polymarket’s management team. The company appointed Warren Jenson as its first chief financial officer on Sept. 10 and later added former DoorDash executive Collin McKinney Hill as vice president of operations.
The appointments add leadership across finance, operations and crypto product development. Coplan also said Polymarket plans to hold a DeFi-focused town hall to gather feedback on its onchain offering.
