ABOUT USDC

What Is USD Coin (USDC)?

USD Coin (USDC) is a fiat-backed stablecoin issued by Circle and designed to maintain a value of one US dollar. Circle reports that USDC in circulation is backed by highly liquid cash and cash-equivalent assets and is redeemable 1:1 for US dollars under its applicable terms.

USDC first launched on Ethereum in September 2018 and is now issued natively across multiple blockchain networks. Unlike cryptocurrencies with a fixed supply, the amount of USDC in circulation increases when new tokens are issued and decreases when they are redeemed.

QUICK OVERVIEW

USDC at a Glance

USDC is a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Circle across supported public blockchains. It does not operate on its own network. Instead, native USDC is issued on individual blockchains according to each network’s technical standards.

USDC is designed to maintain a value of $1. Its supply can expand when new tokens are issued and contract when USDC is redeemed and removed from circulation. The overview below covers its origins, purpose, reserve backing and issuance model.

When Was USDC Created?

Circle announced plans for USD Coin on May 15, 2018. The company described USDC as a reserve-backed digital dollar that would be issued under the open-source framework developed by the CENTRE Consortium.

USDC officially launched on September 26, 2018, with Circle serving as its first commercial issuer. It initially operated as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Coinbase added support the following month and joined Circle as a co-founding member of the CENTRE Consortium.

The launch created a way to hold and transfer US dollar value on public blockchains without relying on the price of a volatile cryptocurrency.

September 9, 2020

USDC Expanded Beyond Ethereum

Circle introduced support for native USDC on Algorand, marking an early step in USDC’s expansion into a multichain stablecoin.

April 26, 2023

Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol Launched

Circle launched CCTP, allowing native USDC to be burned on one supported blockchain and minted on another.

August 21, 2023

Circle Took USDC Governance In-House

Circle and Coinbase ended the independent CENTRE Consortium. Circle remained the issuer and assumed its USDC governance and operational responsibilities.

July 1, 2024

European USDC Issuance Began Under MiCA

Circle Internet Financial Europe SAS became a second issuer of USDC for the European Economic Area. USDC issued by the two Circle entities remains fungible.

UNDERSTANDING USDC

How Does USDC Work?

USDC combines issuer-managed reserves with tokens that move across public blockchains. Circle controls when native USDC is issued or redeemed, while each supported blockchain records and confirms transfers made by its users.

Eligible businesses and institutions can issue or redeem USDC directly through Circle Mint. Most individuals obtain USDC through an exchange, wallet or other third-party provider instead of dealing directly with Circle.

On Ethereum, USDC follows the ERC-20 token standard. Native USDC on other networks follows the technical format of the blockchain on which it is issued.

01 FUND Add US Dollars

An eligible Circle Mint customer transfers US dollars to its account and requests USDC on a supported blockchain.

02 ISSUE Circle Mints USDC

Circle issues the corresponding amount of native USDC. The new tokens enter circulation on the customer’s selected blockchain.

03 TRANSFER Send or Use USDC

USDC can be transferred between compatible wallets or used through supported exchanges, payment services and blockchain applications. Fees and settlement times depend on the selected network or provider.

04 REDEEM Convert USDC to USD

An eligible customer returns USDC to Circle and requests US dollars. The redeemed USDC is burned and removed from circulation. Other users generally convert USDC to USD through a supported exchange or service.

MARKET VALUE

What Keeps USDC Close to $1?

USDC is designed to maintain a value of one US dollar. Circle supports this target by holding reserves for the USDC in circulation and allowing eligible customers to issue or redeem USDC against US dollars.

The USD Coin price on an exchange is still determined by buyers and sellers. It can move slightly above or below $1 when demand changes, liquidity becomes limited or market participants become uncertain about reserves, banking access or redemptions.

When USDC trades away from $1, eligible market participants may buy, sell, issue or redeem it to benefit from the difference. This activity can help move the market price back toward its dollar reference, although the process is not guaranteed to be immediate.

Reserve Assets

The availability and quality of the assets backing USDC influence confidence in its ability to remain redeemable for US dollars.

Issuance and Redemption

Direct access to minting and redemption gives eligible customers a way to exchange USDC and USD at the issuer level.

Market Liquidity

Deep order books make it easier to trade USDC near $1. Lower liquidity can lead to wider price differences.

Market Demand

Increased buying or selling on a particular exchange can temporarily push the USDC price above or below $1.

Banking and Issuer Operations

Disruptions involving Circle, its banking partners or access to reserve assets may affect confidence and redemption activity.

Regulation and Network Risk

Regulatory changes, smart contract problems or disruptions on a supported blockchain can affect how USDC is accessed and traded.

What Is the Current USDC Price?

USDC is currently trading at $1.00 USD, placing it at a discount of 0.01% from its $1 reference value.

The live USD Coin price, 24-hour range, market capitalization and trading volume are shown in the USDC Snapshot above.

Is USDC Safe?

USDC is backed by highly liquid cash and cash-equivalent assets. Circle publishes information about its reserves and provides monthly third-party assurance reports comparing those reserves with the amount of USDC in circulation.

That does not make USDC risk-free. Holders may still face issuer, banking, regulatory, smart contract, network, exchange and custody risks. USDC may also trade below $1 during periods of market stress. Holding USDC is not the same as keeping money in an insured bank account.

How Does USDC Yield Work?

USDC does not automatically pay interest or generate a return simply because it is held in a wallet. USDC yield is offered through separate products such as exchange rewards, lending services, decentralized finance protocols or other third-party platforms.

The provider determines the rate and how the return is generated. Earning yield may introduce additional risks, including borrower defaults, platform failures, smart contract vulnerabilities, withdrawal restrictions and changing interest rates.

USING AND REDEEMING USDC

How Do You Convert USDC to USD?

USDC can be converted to US dollars through Circle Mint or a supported exchange, wallet or off-ramp provider. Direct access to Circle Mint is intended for eligible institutions, while individuals usually convert USDC to USD through a third-party service.

A direct redemption and an exchange sale are not quite the same. When USDC is redeemed directly with Circle, the returned tokens are burned and removed from circulation. When USDC is sold through an exchange, the tokens normally pass to another market participant and may remain in circulation.

1 SERVICE

Choose a Conversion Route

Eligible institutions may be able to redeem USDC through Circle Mint. Most individuals use an exchange, wallet or off-ramp service that supports USDC sales and bank withdrawals in their jurisdiction.

2 NETWORK

Check the USDC Network

Confirm that the service supports the blockchain on which your USDC is held. Sending USDC through an unsupported network or to an incompatible address may result in the funds being lost.

3 CONVERT

Convert USDC to USD

Transfer the USDC to the service and follow its conversion process. The amount received may be affected by the exchange rate, trading spread, service fees and withdrawal charges.

4 WITHDRAW

Withdraw the US Dollars

Withdraw the converted funds using an available bank transfer or other supported payment method. Processing times, minimum amounts and withdrawal limits depend on the provider.

Before You Convert USDC to USD

Check the provider, blockchain network and total conversion cost before transferring your USDC. Transactions sent to the wrong address or through an unsupported network may be difficult or impossible to recover.
