US Sold Anthropic Shares Seized From FTX Executives in 2025
The US government sold Anthropic shares forfeited by former Alameda chief Caroline Ellison and former FTX engineering director Nishad Singh in 2025 after the two surrendered investments originally bought for a combined $50 million.
The US Marshals Service reportedly sold the holdings to existing Anthropic investors. The buyers, exact sale dates and transaction prices have not been disclosed, leaving the government’s proceeds unknown.
Ellison and Singh Invested $50M in Anthropic in 2022
Ellison invested $10 million through a Simple Agreement for Future Equity in March 2022 and later received Series B preferred shares.
Singh separately invested $40 million through a SAFE in April 2022. Both later pleaded guilty in the FTX criminal case and cooperated with prosecutors.
Ellison’s final forfeiture order transferred her Anthropic stake to the United States on February 18, 2025. Singh’s final order followed on April 22. Those dates establish government ownership, not when the shares were later sold.
Estimates Value Forfeited Stakes at $250M to $1.1B
Anthropic’s valuation changed sharply during 2025, making the undisclosed sale dates important to determining what the government received. Outside estimates have placed the combined value of Ellison and Singh’s holdings between roughly $250 million and $1.1 billion depending on the assumed sale date and dilution.
Those figures are estimates rather than confirmed government proceeds. The Marshals Service has not disclosed the transaction value, while the Justice Department has said information involving asset sales and victim compensation is confidential.
The holdings were separate from FTX’s own larger Anthropic investment. The bankruptcy estate sold its remaining position in 2024, generating about $1.3 billion from an original $500 million investment.
FTX Estate Had Not Received Proceeds by June 2026
FTX estate filings indicated that proceeds from Ellison and Singh’s forfeited shares had not been transferred to the bankruptcy estate as of the end of June 2026.
Federal prosecutors previously chose a Justice Department remission process to handle compensation for the large number of FTX victims.
The amount received from the Anthropic sale remains undisclosed, as does whether those proceeds will ultimately be distributed through the remission process.
