Metaplanet Denies $320M BTC Sale After 5,014 BTC Transfer

Metaplanet has denied selling Bitcoin after 5,014 BTC, worth roughly $320 million, moved between addresses associated with the Tokyo-listed treasury company and triggered speculation about a possible disposal.

CEO Simon Gerovich said the transactions were a routine transfer between Metaplanet-controlled custodial addresses. He said no Bitcoin was sold and confirmed that the company still holds 43,000 BTC.

Gerovich Says 5,014 BTC Remained Within Metaplanet Custody

On-chain trackers flagged large movements from Metaplanet-linked wallets before the company clarified their destination. Earlier tracking had identified 3,881 BTC leaving known addresses before Gerovich put the total moved over roughly 24 hours at 5,014 BTC.

Gerovich said the receiving addresses remained within Metaplanet’s custody structure and described the movement as a routine custody operation rather than a liquidation. He also said Metaplanet publishes its addresses, making the transfers visible on-chain in real time. The roughly 5,014 BTC movement incurred about $8 in total Bitcoin network fees.

Metaplanet Still Holds 43,000 BTC After Q2 Purchases

Metaplanet disclosed on July 2 that it had acquired 2,823 BTC during the second quarter, lifting total holdings to 43,000 BTC as of June 30. The company reported an aggregate acquisition cost of ¥659.256 billion for the position, equivalent to an average of ¥15,331,542 per Bitcoin.

Metaplanet’s disclosure page contains several subsequent corporate filings, including interim financial results published August 13, but no later notice announcing another Bitcoin purchase or a Bitcoin sale.

Internal Transfer Leaves Metaplanet’s Bitcoin Holdings Unchanged

Metaplanet has built its corporate strategy around accumulating Bitcoin and increasing Bitcoin exposure per share through its treasury and capital-markets operations.

The latest movement does not change its reported Bitcoin balance. Gerovich’s statement leaves Metaplanet at 43,000 BTC, with the 5,014 BTC identified as an internal custody transfer rather than a disposal.

The next material change to that position would require a new purchase, sale, or other treasury disclosure. For now, Metaplanet says the roughly $320 million movement represented a custody operation only.
