Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr has been removed from the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal editorial roster after fellow editor Mark “Murch” Erhardt sought his removal over alleged irregularities involving BIP 110.
BIP editor Bryan Bishop confirmed on August 10 that Dashjr was “no longer a permissioned user” on the BIPs repository. The current BIP 3 document now lists five editors and no longer includes Dashjr.
Murch Cites BIP 110 Handling and Less Than 1% of Editor Comments
Erhardt called for Dashjr’s removal on August 9, alleging that he had used his editorial privileges inconsistently while being closely involved with BIP 110.
Murch said Dashjr attempted to assign the proposal a BIP number publicly before the required mailing-list discussion and later merged an update within minutes of its pull request opening. He also said Dashjr had produced fewer than 1% of BIP editor comments since additional editors joined in April 2024 and had not merged another proposal since May 2024.
Dashjr rejected the allegations, saying he had followed the BIP process consistently and arguing that Erhardt should instead be removed.
Several contributors supported the motion, including fellow BIP editor Olaoluwa Osuntokun. Others raised concerns about procedure. Jameson Lopp described the situation as unprecedented because no formal governance process exists for removing BIP editors.
BIP 110 Branch Stalls After Two Blocks and Falls 326 Blocks Behind
The dispute followed a chain split involving nodes enforcing BIP 110 at Bitcoin block 961,632 on August 8.
The minority branch produced blocks 961,632 and 961,633 before stalling. By August 11, Bitcoin’s dominant chain had reached block 961,959, leaving the BIP 110 branch 326 blocks behind.
BIP 110 proposes temporary consensus-level limits on many forms of transaction data. The official BIP repository now lists the proposal as Closed.
BIP 3 Now Lists Five Editors After Dashjr’s Removal
The current editorial roster consists of Bryan Bishop, Jon Atack, Mark Erhardt, Olaoluwa Osuntokun and Ruben Somsen.
Under BIP 3, editors review proposals against procedural and technical criteria, assign BIP numbers and merge qualifying submissions. The document explicitly says editors do not determine whether a proposal is likely to be adopted.
The BIPs repository likewise states that publication does not indicate community consensus or impending adoption and that ultimate acceptance rests with Bitcoin users.
Dashjr’s removal ends his privileged editorial access but does not prevent him from contributing to Bitcoin software or submitting future proposals through the normal process. He remains the maintainer of Bitcoin Knots, while BIP 110 itself is now listed as Closed.
