Fiserv Launches First Live Bank Stablecoin Use Case On Solana

Fiserv has taken its digital asset platform live with financial institutions, using Solana to process transactions for its first production stablecoin, Bank of North Dakota’s Roughrider Coin.

The rollout gives more than 90 participating banks and credit unions in North Dakota access to a dollar-backed token for bank-to-bank payments through Fiserv’s existing commercial banking software.

Roughrider Coin Runs On Solana for Interbank Settlement

Roughrider Coin is the first live product on Fiserv’s digital asset platform. Bank of North Dakota is using the system for issuance, reserve, custody and settlement infrastructure, while transactions are processed on Solana.

Participating institutions access the token through Commercial Center, Fiserv’s online banking system already used for traditional interbank money movement.

The setup allows banks to use blockchain-based settlement without moving their workflow to a separate crypto platform. Roughrider Coin is fully backed by U.S. dollars and is designed for payments between North Dakota community banks and credit unions.

VersaBank Handles Issuance, Custody, and Reserves

VersaBank USA serves as the issuer of Roughrider Coin and handles minting, burning, custody and reserve asset management.

Fireblocks provides digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services, while Fiserv connects those services to participating financial institutions through its banking platform.

The structure separates blockchain transaction processing on Solana from the regulated banking functions supporting issuance and reserves.

Roughrider Coin Moves Fiserv Stablecoin Plans Into Production

Fiserv first outlined its broader stablecoin strategy in June 2025 when it announced FIUSD, a planned dollar-backed token for financial institution clients using infrastructure from Paxos and Circle.

Roughrider Coin now moves that strategy from planned infrastructure into a live bank deployment.

Bank of North Dakota, Fiserv, VersaBank and First International Bank & Trust are also assessing implementation and future uses for the token as the rollout develops.
