Coinbase Clearing Wins DCO Registration, Plans USDC Collateral

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization, allowing it to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps. Coinbase says the new entity will use USDC collateral and support 24/7 settlement. Coinbase describes the unit as the first USDC-native clearinghouse, although that characterization comes from the company rather than the CFTC.

CFTC Registers Coinbase Clearing as DCO

The CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing on Sept. 28 by Commission order. Its permitted activities cover fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps.

Coinbase said the clearinghouse allows it to clear and settle fully collateralized derivatives directly. The company plans to continue using existing clearing partners for some products, including margined derivatives and its planned single-stock perpetual futures.

Coinbase Builds Full U.S. Derivatives Stack

The registration adds a clearinghouse to Coinbase’s existing regulated derivatives operations. Coinbase Financial Markets operates as a futures commission merchant, while Coinbase Derivatives is a designated contract market.

Adding a registered DCO gives Coinbase separate regulated entities covering brokerage, exchange, and clearing functions. Coinbase General Counsel Molly Abraham said the registration expands the company’s derivatives infrastructure.

“Today’s CFTC approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement.”

Coinbase Plans USDC as Native Collateral

Coinbase said Coinbase Clearing is designed around USDC collateral and continuous settlement rather than traditional banking-hour settlement windows. The CFTC registration itself does not designate Coinbase Clearing as the country’s first USDC-native DCO or specifically endorse USDC collateral.

The regulator’s public record confirms its registration and permitted clearing activities, while the “first” description comes from Coinbase. Coinbase said the new structure will give it more control over clearing operations for future fully collateralized derivatives.
