Hyperscale Data Sells 685 Bitcoin for $43 Million, Cutting Treasury to 275 BTC
Key Takeaways
- Hyperscale Data sold 685 BTC for roughly $43 million to fund its Michigan data center buildout and cut debt by about $30 million.
- The sale dropped the treasury from over 1,000 BTC to 275 in under a month, though the company says it plans to rebuild through mining.
- The move fits a wider pattern of listed miners liquidating Bitcoin reserves to fund AI and HPC infrastructure.
Hyperscale Data sold approximately 685 Bitcoin for around $43 million, reduced debt by roughly $30 million and said the proceeds would support its Michigan data center buildout. The sale leaves about 275 BTC on the company’s balance sheet.
Treasury Fell From 1,087 BTC to 275 in Under a Month
The company held 1,087.4527 BTC valued at roughly $70.3 million as of July 19. A late-July monetization tied to the Michigan project was followed by Friday’s larger disposal.
Hyperscale Data disclosed a treasury of approximately 961 BTC worth about $62.3 million on August 11, three days before announcing the 685-coin sale. The company reported expected total assets of approximately $360 million, or about $0.62 per outstanding Class A share, with book value near $0.19 per share.
Executive Chairman Milton “Todd” Ault III framed the sale as a capital allocation decision rather than a change in position on Bitcoin.
“We intend to continue mining Bitcoin and, over time, expect to use mining production and available capital to rebuild and increase our Bitcoin position.”
Ault said the highest and best use of part of the treasury at this stage is redeploying capital into the Michigan buildout and aligning the company’s debt and equity structure with its opportunities.
Board Is Weighing a Sale of the Michigan Data Center
The sale lands three days after Hyperscale Data said its board is considering all options to maximize stockholder value, including a potential sale of the Michigan data center itself. The company issued preliminary 2027 revenue guidance of $300 million to $350 million on August 4.
The pace of any future Bitcoin accumulation will depend on mining production, Bitcoin prices, liquidity requirements, capital expenditures and market conditions, the company said. It will continue evaluating allocation across Bitcoin holdings, data center infrastructure, debt obligations and working capital.
Hyperscale Joins Core Scientific and Cango in Liquidating BTC for Infrastructure
The sale fits a pattern across publicly listed miners moving toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing infrastructure. Core Scientific held 2,537 BTC at the end of 2025 and sold roughly 1,900 for $175 million in January, later saying it expects to monetize substantially all of its Bitcoin reserves in 2026 to fund its AI and HPC colocation strategy.
Cango sold 4,451 BTC for roughly $305 million earlier this year, and Bitdeer has liquidated its Bitcoin treasury to support infrastructure growth.
Bernstein analysts said in May that Bitcoin miners have become embedded in AI infrastructure development, collectively controlling more than 27 GW of planned power capacity. At a time when securing a single gigawatt can take close to 50 months across U.S. markets.
